Get ready for an exciting cricket showdown as England's captain, Ben Stokes, makes a powerful comeback!
The Ashes Warm-up: A Captain's Return
In a highly anticipated warm-up match against Andrew Flintoff's Lions in Perth, Ben Stokes showcased his skills, taking an impressive six wickets on the first day. This performance is a strong indicator of his readiness for the upcoming Ashes series, especially after a lengthy break due to injury.
But here's where it gets controversial... Stokes, who hasn't played since July due to a shoulder injury, proved his critics wrong. Despite the local media's barbs, he demonstrated his threat, dismissing six key players: Tom Haines, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox, Rehan Ahmed, Tom Lawes, and Will Jacks. A true leader, he led the attack at Lilac Hill, claiming 6-52 in just 16 overs.
And this is the part most people miss... Stokes' performance wasn't the only highlight. Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Joe Root each took a wicket, showcasing the depth of England's bowling attack. Will Jacks, with an impressive 84 off 85 balls, was the top scorer for the Lions.
England vice-captain Harry Brook summed up the day, saying, "A successful day out. It's great to be back together as a team, working towards our goal of 10 wickets. We're looking forward to batting tomorrow and hoping for another beautiful day in Perth to pile on the runs."
Brook also praised Stokes' comeback, calling him a "proper player" and expressing his delight at having him back in the side, leading from the front.
However, one player's performance raised eyebrows. Jacob Bethell, who needed to make a statement after a lean white-ball tour of New Zealand, dragged a short ball to square leg, scoring just two off 17 balls. This performance makes it increasingly unlikely that he'll unseat Ollie Pope from the No. 3 slot.
The outground offered generous bounce but modest pace, with Durham's Ben McKinney making 67 before being dismissed by Tongue just after lunch. Jordan Cox also posted a lively 53.
As for the all-rounder Stokes, he showed his ability to force breakthroughs, something his teammates Archer, Atkinson, and Mark Wood couldn't quite manage. Cox and Ahmed both fell to Stokes' bouncers, shovelling to fine-leg.
Mark Wood, making his first appearance in nine months, got through two brisk four-over spells but left the field before tea, with Bethell taking his place in the field.
Wood will undergo a precautionary scan on Friday after feeling hamstring stiffness. England's left-arm spinner Shoaib Bashir was left out of the XI, possibly hinting at their strategy for the first Test, but he'll get his chance to impress when the Lions bowl in the second innings.
