The Department of Justice (DOJ) is in the midst of a monumental task, with over 2 million records in various stages of review, according to a recent court filing. This massive undertaking comes with a looming deadline set by a Trump-signed bill, which mandates the release of these files by December 19th. But here's where it gets intriguing: the DOJ has already posted 12,285 documents, totaling around 125,000 pages, to its 'DOJ Epstein Library'.
The challenge lies in the sheer volume of documents and the sensitive nature of the content. Federal prosecutors are enlisting the help of approximately 400 attorneys across Washington, D.C., New York, and Florida, dedicating a significant portion of their workdays to this endeavor. This dedicated team includes lawyers from the Criminal and National Security Divisions, as well as over 100 FBI analysts with expertise in handling confidential victim materials.
The process is meticulous, with many attorneys possessing experience in victim-privacy related matters. As Jay Clayton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, notes, the materials and documents require careful redaction to protect the privacy of victims. Despite the substantial effort, the DOJ acknowledges that there is still much work to be done.
The DOJ's letter does not disclose the total page count of the reviewed records or provide a specific timeline for completion. However, it does highlight a potential issue: a 'meaningful portion' of about 1 million newly identified FBI records may be duplicative, requiring a process of processing and deduplication. This adds another layer of complexity to the already challenging task.
Furthermore, the DOJ has received numerous inquiries from alleged victims and their representatives, requesting further redaction to safeguard the privacy interests of the victims.
