Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the presidential candidate of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), faced a challenging reception in Rukungiri District, a stronghold of senior FDC leaders. Residents accused him of undermining the party's progress and allegedly playing a role in the arrest of former party president Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently detained on charges of treachery and unlawful possession of firearms. The tensions were heightened by the unresolved case of opposition activist Sam Mugumya, who was reportedly abducted in August. Despite this, Mafabi's campaign launch in Rukungiri saw a low turnout and muted enthusiasm. When his convoy entered the town, residents appeared indifferent, and passersby heckled the leaders, accusing them of contributing to the party's decline and Besigye's continued detention. However, Mafabi denied any involvement in Besigye's arrest and pledged to secure his release if elected. He outlined his policy proposals, including tackling corruption, strengthening service delivery, and addressing poverty. He also highlighted the FDC's economic plan, such as an interest-free motorcycle loan scheme for boda boda riders and better pay and free accommodation for medical workers. After the rally, tension flared again as several residents confronted him, demanding his immediate departure. Some accused him of betrayal and insisted he should never return to the district. The situation nearly escalated into physical altercations between locals and members of Mafabi's entourage, leading to his departure for another campaign event in Kanungu District.
