A bold move has been made by Olympic gold medalist Hunter Armstrong, as he joins the Enhanced Games, a controversial sporting event with a unique twist. But here's the catch: Armstrong plans to compete clean, without any performance-enhancing drugs.
Armstrong, a two-time gold medalist and former record holder, has made a public commitment to the Enhanced Games, becoming the first athlete to do so with the intention of maintaining his integrity. In a recent Instagram story, he made his stance clear, leaving many to wonder about the implications of this decision.
The 25-year-old swimmer has been open about his financial struggles, which almost led him to retire last year. In a revealing podcast interview, Armstrong shared his concerns about supporting himself financially while training for future competitions. This is where the Enhanced Games comes into play, offering a substantial prize pool, including $1 million for breaking the world record in the 50 freestyle.
"If I don't join Enhanced, I lose everything. It's a risky move, but it's my chance to keep my head above water," Armstrong explained.
However, there's a twist in the tale. World Aquatics, the international governing body, has implemented a bylaw (bylaw 10) banning participants in Enhanced Games from their events. This has led to legal battles, with the Enhanced Games suing World Aquatics and others, claiming the bylaw is anticompetitive. Despite a federal judge's ruling against them, Armstrong's signing provides a new angle for potential legal action.
"Nobody knows what will happen, and I'm not getting any clear answers," Armstrong shared. "I have to take a chance and hope for the best."
USA Swimming has expressed disappointment in Armstrong's decision, stating that they are unsure how regulatory bodies will respond to this unprecedented situation. Armstrong's last competition was at the U.S. Open in December, and he has since missed out on the U.S. National Championships and the 2025 World Championships selection meet.
Armstrong's journey is an intriguing one. He made his Olympic debut in 2021, qualifying for the men's 100 back and winning gold as a preliminary member of the men's 4x100 medley relay team. Since then, he has continued to shine, winning medals at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and securing a silver medal in Paris in 2024.
With Armstrong's commitment, the Enhanced Games now has 18 swimmers on board, including fellow American and Olympic gold medalist Cody Miller.
