A Historic Achievement for UH Football: Matsuzawa's All-American Journey
Kansei Matsuzawa, the talented placekicker from the University of Hawai'i, has etched his name into the program's history books. In a remarkable feat, Matsuzawa has become the second Rainbow Warrior to be selected for the Associated Press All-America first team, an honor that solidifies his place among the elite in college football.
But here's where it gets controversial... Matsuzawa joins the legendary Al Noga, who achieved this feat in 1986. With this selection, Matsuzawa has not only matched but also extended UH's legacy in the world of college football. Just last week, he made history as the first UH player to receive first-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Matsuzawa is the first Rainbow Warrior to be recognized by the Associated Press since wide receiver Greg Salas in 2010. And this is the part most people miss: Matsuzawa was also the first UH player to receive Midseason All-America honors from the Associated Press, a testament to his consistent excellence.
The Associated Press All-America team is a prestigious selection, voted on by 52 media members across the country, who also contribute to the AP Top 25 voting panel. This team is one of five All-America squads that contribute to the NCAA's annual consensus team, alongside Walter Camp, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), The Sporting News, and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
So far, Matsuzawa has been named to two of these five teams, with the other three announcements expected this week. The 'Tokyo Toe', as he's affectionately known, was also a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, ultimately won by Oklahoma's Tate Sandell.
Matsuzawa's impressive regular season, where he converted 25 out of 26 field goal attempts, has earned him recognition on several other All-America teams, including CBS Sports' first team. His achievements have not gone unnoticed, and he continues to rack up accolades.
All-America Teams Honoring Matsuzawa's Talent:
- Walter Camp - First Team
- Associated Press - First Team
- CBS Sports - First Team
- The Athletic - Second Team
- Sports Illustrated - Second Team
- Sports Info Solutions - Second Team

Matsuzawa's journey is a testament to his skill, dedication, and the impact he's had on the UH football program. As we await the remaining All-America team announcements, it's clear that Matsuzawa has already made an indelible mark on college football.
