Drafted by Montreal in 1991, he played in their farm system for seven years and even donned the Montreal uniform for 41 MLB games in 1998. After injuries cut his playing career short, he spent over a decade as a manager and field coordinator in the minors, witnessing the franchise's relocation to Washington.
And this is the part most people miss: Henley's connection to the Nationals doesn't end there. He was promoted to third base coach in 2014 and held the position for eight seasons. After a brief stint as a player development coach, he returned to the coaching staff last July as a field coordinator when the Nationals made changes following the departure of manager Davey Martinez.
Stammen and Plawecki already have a working relationship from their time in San Diego, and Plawecki's minor league playing days with the Padres add another layer of familiarity. Goins, on the other hand, brings a fresh perspective, having spent the last two seasons with the Angels. His eight-year Major League career with the Blue Jays showcased his defensive prowess, despite his struggles at the plate. Goins' recent experience as an infield coach with the Angels will undoubtedly benefit the Padres' infielders.
Goins' defensive skills were a highlight during his playing days, and his coaching experience with the Angels makes him a valuable addition. Meanwhile, Plawecki's eight seasons in the majors, primarily as a backup catcher, provide a wealth of knowledge for the Padres' catchers.
