Rita Ora reveals at the Red Sea International Film Festival’s Deadline Studio that she is developing Fyre Fest The Musical with Taika Waititi, the Oscar-winning director and her husband, and also hints at a possible return to Disney’s Descendants universe as the Queen of Hearts.
Fyre Fest The Musical is described as a stage musical-comedy centered on the infamous Fyre Festival and its founder Billy McFarland. The project’s score is being composed by Skyfall writer Paul Epworth, with Bryan Buckley (The Pirates of Somalia) handling the book and directing, and David Korins, renowned for his Hamilton set designs, collaborating on the production’s visual design.
Ora reflected on the audience’s reaction to the announcement, admitting the response surprised them. She explained that the attraction of the story lies in exploring the lengths people will go to for belonging and participation, noting the psychological aspects behind that drive. With Taika’s humor and filmmaking sensibilities paired with her own musical background, she described the collaboration as an experiment in what might unfold.
When pressed for specifics, Ora teased that the show could premiere in London’s West End rather than Broadway, noting her own English roots and preference for the West End, while leaving room for a future move to Broadway depending on energy and momentum once the project is fully developed.
Regarding a potential return as The Queen Of Hearts in Disney’s Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, Ora praised the franchise and the legacy of the role. She expressed excitement about offering a fresh take on the character, acknowledging predecessors like Helena Bonham Carter.
Ora also highlighted Brandy, who portrays Cinderella, as a musical inspiration and appreciated being part of such a large, shared project.
