In a bold move that has sent ripples through the soccer community, San Diego FC has finalized the acquisition of midfielder Lewis Morgan from Red Bull New York. This transfer, confirmed by both clubs on Tuesday, marks a significant step for San Diego as they look to enhance their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
As part of this transaction, San Diego will be receiving not only Lewis Morgan but also $525,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). In return, New York stands to gain up to $1.1 million in GAM, which includes a guaranteed amount of $450,000 in 2026, along with an additional $650,000 contingent upon certain performance metrics. Furthermore, the Red Bulls will retain a portion of Morgan’s salary budget charge for 2026 and have secured San Diego's natural third-round pick in the 2027 MLS SuperDraft.
Lewis Morgan, a 29-year-old Scottish international, is under contract with San Diego until 2026, with options to extend through 2027 and 2028. He brings a wealth of experience to the club, having previously played six seasons in Major League Soccer (MLS), starting with Inter Miami CF before his tenure with New York.
SDFC’s sporting director, Tyler Heaps, expressed his enthusiasm for Morgan's arrival, stating, "Lewis is an attacker who can play across the front three and brings qualities that will add to our group in 2026. He’s proven he can contribute goals and assists in this league, and we look forward to welcoming him to San Diego when we start preseason in the new year."
Morgan has had a notable career in MLS, where he was recognized as the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year, contributing significantly to the Red Bulls' run to the MLS Cup that same season. Despite facing injuries that sidelined him for much of the 2023 and 2025 campaigns, he has still managed to rack up impressive stats, totaling 38 goals and 17 assists across 140 matches in all competitions.
On the international stage, Morgan has earned seven caps for Scotland, including participation in UEFA Euro 2024, showcasing his talent on a larger platform.
Julian de Guzman, the head of sport for Red Bull New York, reflected on Morgan's professionalism and resilience throughout his career, wishing him success in San Diego.
San Diego FC is coming off a remarkable debut season, where they set records as an expansion team, achieving 63 points and 19 wins, and making a deep run to the Western Conference Final in the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs. Conversely, the Red Bulls are now in a rebuilding phase after their impressive 15-year playoff streak came to an end, finishing in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 43 points.
This transfer is certainly one to watch as it may redefine the trajectories of both clubs in the upcoming season. How do you feel about this trade? Is Morgan the right fit for San Diego, or should the Red Bulls have held onto him a little longer? Share your thoughts!
