Experts at JWS waste company have shared a clever trick that leverages an everyday kitchen staple: aluminum foil. Forget expensive gadgets; this method is all about utilizing what you already have.
So, how does it work? First, identify potential hiding spots – think under kitchen cupboards or behind wardrobes. Then, line these areas with aluminum foil. The key here is understanding why this works. Rats are sensitive creatures. The texture, the noise, and the unusual sensation of foil under their feet are all deterrents. When they step on it, the noise startles them, and the slippery surface prevents them from gaining traction, making them want to avoid the area.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that this is only a temporary solution. However, the foil method is a very effective method for small problem areas.
Beyond foil, a clutter-free home is crucial. Rats are always on the lookout for nesting materials. Old newspapers, cardboard boxes, and open bins are like a welcome mat for these unwanted guests. Ensure that not only your home but also your sheds and garages are free of these items.
And this is the part most people miss... Secure your bins with tight-fitting lids. This prevents rats from accessing food waste, a major attractant. The same goes for dried foods like nuts and pet food. Rats have an incredible sense of smell, so sealing all food in containers eliminates the scent trail and prevents them from finding their way in.
