Tyson Fury, the self-proclaimed 'Gypsy King,' is back from his brief retirement and already eyeing his next opponent. After teasing fans with training videos from Thailand, he's officially declared his intention to return to the ring this year, with a comeback fight slated for April. But here's where it gets interesting... who will he face?
According to Fury's manager, Spencer Brown, several potential opponents are being considered for this comeback bout. One name that's been heavily floated is Arslanbek Makhmudov, a powerful fighter fresh off a victory over Dave Allen. Makhmudov's aggressive style and rising profile make him a compelling, albeit risky, choice for Fury's return.
Remember, Fury hasn't fought since his hard-fought loss to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024. That defeat, preceded by a narrow split decision loss to the same opponent earlier that year, clearly left him hungry for redemption. So, the strategy seems to be: shake off the ring rust with a tune-up fight, possibly against Makhmudov, before jumping back into the shark-infested waters of the heavyweight division.
Of course, the fight everyone really wants to see is Fury vs. Anthony Joshua. The all-British clash would be a monumental event, a true spectacle. However, Joshua's future remains uncertain after a tragic car accident in Nigeria. Our thoughts are with him.
But this is the part most people miss... Fury has another name in mind, and it's a surprising one: WBO titlist Fabio Wardley. Fury has publicly stated that he sees Wardley as an ideal opponent for a 'big test' later in 2026, with the ultimate goal of becoming a three-time world heavyweight champion.
In a recent Instagram post, the towering Fury emphasized that if both he and Wardley emerge victorious from their upcoming fights, an all-British showdown is a real possibility.
"Let’s see how I am looking in my return fight, then later in 2026 this would be a good option for me to try [and] become [three-time] heavyweight champion," Fury stated.
He also acknowledged the widespread desire for a Fury-Joshua fight, adding, "I know the fight you guys all want but, at this time, I won’t say his name out of respect, as he is in mourning. But if he is not going to continue in boxing, I’d like Big Fab as a big test. This would be a massive spectacle! 2026 is the year of our lord Jesus Christ.”
Wardley, for his part, is coming off an impressive 11th-round victory over Joseph Parker in October, a win that saw him elevated to full WBO champion after Usyk relinquished the title.
Now, here's where it gets controversial... Is Fury genuinely interested in testing himself against Wardley, or is this a strategic move to put pressure on Joshua to finally agree to a fight? Some might argue that Wardley, while a talented fighter, doesn't possess the same name recognition or drawing power as Joshua. Others might see this as Fury demonstrating his willingness to face any challenger, regardless of reputation.
