The traditional banking landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, and it’s leaving many customers wondering what’s next. By February 2026, a staggering 71 bank branches across the UK will shut their doors for good, marking yet another wave of closures in an industry increasingly dominated by digital transactions. But here’s where it gets controversial: while banks cite the rise of online banking as the primary reason, critics argue that these closures disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, particularly the elderly and those in rural areas, who rely heavily on in-person services. The Lloyds Banking Group, which oversees Lloyds, Halifax, and the Bank of Scotland, is at the forefront of this change.
